NHTS Eliminates Auto Defect Reports, Consumer Groups Protest

Five consumer and safety organizations sent a protest letter to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Dr. Jeffrey Runge after the decision by federal safety regulators to stop monthly status report publications on vehicle defect investigations. The NHTSA decision was made in 2002 because it felt the auto reports were incompatible with a new computer system and that the public is being better served by NHTS Web site updates.

The Center for Auto Safety executive director commented on the NHTSA decision with a disapproving “You’re supposed to get better.” The new, $7 million computer system was designed after the Ford Explorer/ Firestone tire rollover deaths and accidents in order to manage the extensive NHTSA records that the agency started to collect from automakers and suppliers in hopes of identifying early product defect signs.
