Study Finds Significant Death Risk Prevention for Vehicle Collisions

A study recently released has indicated side air bags could make a significant impact on the number of collision deaths that occur. The senior vice president for research at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety believes this study shows great promise in reducing highway death stating, “we don’t often find reductions of this size.” Side air bags are considered a recent addition to car technology, and the recent study is the first major side air bag look.

Due to the high number of deaths and pressure from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), automakers have agreed to take steps to improve safety. Included in the auto safety study were stats showing that 157 drivers died for every 100,000-passenger cars involved in side collisions in the years between 1997-2002. Cars without side air bag options had a higher death toll of 362. The 2004 car models will offer side air bags in over 200 vehicles from 35 different automobile makers.
