NHTSA Weakening Its Own Authority to Protect the Public, According to Consumer Group

A proposal five years in the making would have required car manufacturers to notify dealers of any auto defects five days after telling the federal government about them. The proposal would have put pressure on the car manufacturers to fix safety problems.

Instead, the NHTSA has allowed an absence of time restraints for manufacturers to alert dealers of auto defects. This means the manufacturers can fix safety problems on their own schedule and allow dealers to continue to sell the defective vehicles without the consumers ever knowing. The Public Citizen consumer group thinks that the “NHTSA is protecting auto manufacturers' profits and endangering consumers.”
